Special Sheriffs Commission

I have been appointed to serve as a member of the Special Sheriffs Commission.  When the legislature transferred the Sheriffs from the counties to the state it created this Special Sheriffs Commission.  The Commission is authorized to review, study, and make recommendations about the reorganization, consolidation, operation, administration, regulation, governance and finances of the Massachusetts sheriffs’ offices.  Click here to read the legislation.

Because of the complicated issues involved, the Commission’s mandate was extended to the end of 2011.  To date, the Commission has reviewed many documents from the Sheriffs and other state agencies, and held a number of Commission meetings to gather information.  We hope to finalize the report by the end of 2011.
